If I was to get one of the new Mac Pros, I would probably go for:

* Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
* 4GB (4 x 1GB)
* 250GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s (( STOCK – will add my own faster ones for a lot cheaper)
* ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB (2 x dual-link DVI)
* Both Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and AirPort Extreme
* AppleCare Protection Plan for Mac Pro/Power Mac

And then add on 3 Seagate 7200.10’s for a big RAID and we’re good to go :) Oh, and another Dell 2407FPW.

Why Not?

I’m on the fence though. I definitely want a Mac Pro, and will definitely get one eventually. The big question is: is this the Mac pro update that everyone was waiting for? It’s not really an upgrade, just a new core…

One theory of mine is that Apple has a newly developed one, with newer architecture, smaller, cooler, etc. (as in rumors a few months ago) but are cleaning out their inventory with this one – using the quad core upgrade to hype it up. I’m sure Mac Pro sales have doubled or tripled in the last week, especially with that big feature on their homepage and all the news.

I’d hate for them to come out with something significantly nicer in just a month or two.

The Other Side

But of course, that’s just paranoid speculation. And the release of something better doesn’t suddenly ruin what was out before. The system outlined would probably be more than powerful enough, and is matured enough that even a new release would probably only yield 5–10% gains.

And I could make use of it. Spring break is coming up and if I have it by and during then, it might greatly improve productivity. Both the better performance (less waiting for stuff to open, save, etc.) and the improved workflow (2 24″ monitors – something I can’t do on a macbook pro).

Of course, no one except maybe the people at Apple know what’s going on, so it’s a pretty tough decision…

What’s your take?

I think you should go for it, currently it is an awesome machine, and the best thing about the Mac Pro is expandability. Anything Apple adds, you can do yourself at a later stage too.
