Today in panels, I realized how annoying the mac startup sound is. I love OS X and all, but I’m pretty disappointed by the lack of power in the preferences. Many things that should be included aren’t – ie. sleeping when lid closed, startup sound, system fans, etc. What most people do is turn off the volume or mute it before they turn it off. If you forget to do that though, the startup sound is loud and annoying – not an issue in an office or at home, but in a classroom or panel or something it’s rather lame.
So today I was sitting in a panel and was worried the startup sound would be really loud in the quiet room. Then I remembered that I had installed a small patch that disabled it. This is specific to macbook/pros but I think that’s about 95% of the people out there, and windows doesn’t really have this issue (or I can’t remember since it’s been so long).
Anyways, install the startup sound prefpane and set it to mute the startup sound. System volume will still be normal and all, just no unexpected surprises when you boot up :)
