Cooking and photography are great arts - but doing them both together is an art in itself (simoultaneously, that is). I know because I just tried it. I just cooked a burger and then took some pictures. And then I ate it - it was quite good. I learned a few things too. There is a right way and a wrong way (photogenically) to cut a tomato - I did the wrong way. I’ll be doing the same shoot agian sometime later this week so I’ll nail it next time.
You’re probably wondering if you’ve come to the right blog, and why I’m going on and on about my dinner. Well, it’ll all part of an idea I had: the Weekly Branding Initiative. Don’t ask about the name - I just made it up and thought it sounds pretty cool.
For a while now I’ve been wanting to take good pictures, do more branding and get into print work. With this project, I can do all three. I really like photography and pictures, especially when coupled with great design. I haven’t taken as many pictures as I wanted to this summer, definitely not enough to justify my five grand camera setup. I think branding and logos are really cool but haven’t done as many as I’d like to. And I’d love to make some great print work, with my printer coming sometime next week.
In comes the WBI (Weekly Branding Initiative) – basically a series of projects, ideally one a week (or maybe two weeks), basically creating a fictional company or product and some cool advertisments or media for it.
This week’s theme is: food. I will be creating a cool menu/ad for the delicious dragon - a small, bold vegetarian restaurant. It’s currently located in my kitchen but if it goes well, maybe we’ll start a real one. I’ll be cooking a bunch of food this week, and photographing it - and then putting it all together in some type of booklet, and maybe printing it.
And some other ideas for the future are: annual engagement calendars (12 months with a picture for every month) and Christmas cards. Not too sure exactly, we’ll figure it out as we go.
But one thing’s for sure - it’ll be fun.

As an afterthought, I’m still not sure if I cut that tomato right. It doesn’t look that bad..

That’s funny cause I had an idea similar to this a few months back but had touble coming up with inspiration as to what projects to do. That said, sounds like a plan to me, cause unfortunately it’s much harder to break into the print world than the web world. especially when you’re still in high school. Doing some work like this which is fun but will also boost your skills and… look really good to potential clients is a great idea. Good luck bro.

Nice idea Anand, you seem to think like me and do things i do, e.g come up with random ideas such as the calendar thing, i’m always thinking of random things to boost my list of random things i’ve done lol.
About the picture, it looks ok to me, i see where your coming from about a different shape in the cut, keep trying and post the pic when you get it perfect according to your judgement :)

There are also a few ways to cut strawberries - they all look pretty good though: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=233200450&size=l
I love that shot and there’s a few more I’ve taken recently. Looks very much like a GEODE ( http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=geode&btnG=Search ) - very cool if I say so myself.

This project was a fail. Or rather, on hiatus.
It was going GREAT for the first week of september or so, when I wrote this. Then school started. This is really why I hate school…
