Woohoo! The camera we’ve all been waiting for: the Canon 1D MKIII. Oh baby.
February 22, 2007 – Canon, the worldwide market leader in digital cameras, celebrates the 20th anniversary of its top-selling EOS single lens reflex camera system by announcing the EOS-1D Mark III Digital SLR, the world’s fastest digital SLR camera. At 10 frames per second, the 10.1 megapixel EOS-1D Mark III digital SLR can fire huge motor-driven bursts of 110 Large JPEGs or 30 RAW files because it employs the new Dual DIGIC III image processor engine, providing enough computational horsepower to do parallel processing at a rate unmatched by any other digital SLR. The all-new 10.1 megapixel, APS-H size CMOS sensor which is designed and manufactured by Canon, is the most light-sensitive and innovative sensor that Canon has developed to date. It features a new microlens array and a more efficient pixel structure for ultra-low noise, resulting in exceptional image quality and an amazing ISO range of 100 to 3200 with extensions to ISO 50 and a highly usable ISO 6400. Furthermore, Canon today unveils several new accessories, including the EF-16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens and the Speedlite 580EX II Flash.
Wow. I had thought the 8.5fps would be fast. But.. 10?! Holy hell.
Some other cool specs are ISO50-6400. Seems this one will have better light performance than even the 5D, which it should since its newer. 10 MP is a good step up from 8, and should suffice, considering the speed you’re getting with it. It’ll be really important to have the fastest memory card possible, though.
The manufacturers’ suggested list price of the EOS-1D Mark III Digital SLR will be similar to that of its predecessor, the EOS-1D Mark II N Digital SLR.
So it should start at around $4,000 – which is what the 1D MKIIN first launched at, if I recall correctly. MKIIN prices should probably fall to around 3,000. Not bad!
Anyways, I’m a bit disappointed about the 16-35 and 580EX – but only because I still have my 16-35 (though it’s currently down at Canon Irvine for repairs on a squeaky autofocus) and now two 580 EX’s, and I want the new ones cause they seem awesome. Weather proofing on the lens and flash as well! And better build/optical quality.
The pictures and details on the promo site (see first link) are just sweeeeet. Can’t wait till April!
And if you’re as interested as I am, you might enjoy the full white paper.

Damn… I want one too! Canon always manages to 1-up whatever you have and make you drool for the newest release, no matter how much you own. My 1D MkII N is awesome, but now I really want that new 16-35 AND that new 580EX! Time to upgrade…!
