Picking up where we left off.. Yuri and I decided it was missing something. Ultimately I decided it was time to pull out the big guns and to use an idea I had been saving for the new Dragon Interactive—tan stone. It would follow the same shape but add texture in order to make things more interesting. Smooth and black is cool but the grey was getting a bit dull…

There were two main options for the navigation: to the left like in some of the previous drafts, or as a bar across the top (ie. the current version of aprilzero)

Problem with having it at the top is that assigning the buttons colors clashes with their category assignments. Also, it doesn’t do much for the overall shape of the site.

Starting to shape the site and try out new things.

Rounding off sharp corners and adding shadows/highlights.
Starting to experiment a bit here with the nav and elements. A bit of a 3d pad for the column icons, as well as a way to travel through time a few months back and forward.

And at the end of the day, after a bunch of other small decisions and changes…

and starting to fill up the content part…

Hey Anand,
You’re one of the best designers i’ve ever seen.
I’d like a little Tutorial about creating the “arc” next to the Header in Photoshop.
Somebody knew anything? ;)
So long,

I would have to agree with Sash. Would I be wrong in assuming that was done in Photoshop?
Is that scalable with different screen resolutions, or do you have a javascript to detect that?
Would a more in depth tutorial; overall though, GREAT design.

Amazing really, you’ve gotta have a great sense of real painting so you can do all this lighting illusion of depth. I’m really impressed everytime I see someone doing this and the first that I saw creating this amazing effect was http://dragoninteractive.com/ For a pitty I haven’t found any tutorials for that too but I’m sue with a lot of watching I can do that on my own eve though I don’t have that painter sense :)

If this blog-like comment string is still alive, the tutorial on how to create a 3D shelf illusion can be found at:

Wow. Your design capabilities are unparalleled. I’m in awe. I can’t wait to see it finished, despite how INSANELY jealous I am. Design always slows me down, but it seems to come natural to you. keep it up, man!

I have to say, your breadcrumbs for that site are jaw dropping. I also like the superbly executed use of imagery.
